PONs use passive optical splitters to split and distribute the optical signals from the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) to multiple ONUs. However, the splitters themselves do not perform any active processing or signal routing. Therefore, the OLT becomes crucial for centralized control, management, and distribution of data packets to the appropriate ONUs based on the intended recipient. It acts as a convergence point for all incoming and outgoing data traffic, schedules bandwidth allocation, optimizes parameter settings and enables efficient management in PTMP networks.
