Imagine you’re setting up Wi-Fi for a large outdoor event. You need a network that can handle a lot of data quickly and reliably, while also being durable enough to withstand harsh weather conditions. But here the challenge arises: finding a PoE switch that combines speed, power, and resilience.

While 1G switches are more common, they may not provide enough bandwidth for high-performance Wi-Fi 5 outdoor APs, which can support speeds of up to 1.3 Gbps per device. This is where a 2.5G outdoor PoE switch with 10G uplink comes into play. In this blog, we’ll break down what it is and how you can use it to install Wi-Fi 5 outdoor APs with ease.
2.5G Outdoor PoE Switch with 10G Uplink
The 2.5G outdoor PoE switch with 10G Uplink is equipped with 8x 2.5G ports, which provide ultra-fast speeds for multiple outdoor devices, meaning you can stream videos, download files, and access online content without any lag or buffering. Moreover, PoE technology allows you to transmit power and data simultaneously to the devices, eliminating the need for extra power cables. With a waterproof housing and rugged construction, this 2.5G outdoor PoE switch is built to withstand extreme temperatures, humidity and harsh outdoor conditions.

A 2.5G outdoor PoE switch is perfect for this task because it:
- Provides adequate bandwidth: WiFi 5 APs can push more data than a standard 1G connection can handle, making 2.5G ideal.
- Delivers power efficiently: With PoE, you can power your outdoor APs directly through the Ethernet cable, eliminating the need for separate power sources.
- Supports multiple APs: An 8-port switch allows you to connect multiple access points, ensuring broad coverage.
- Offers robust connectivity: The 10G uplink ensures that your entire network can handle the increased traffic without bottlenecks.
The Role of 10G SFP+ Uplink
The 10G SFP+ uplink is a high-speed network connection that supports 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) over fiber optic cables. It’s often used to connect an access switch to the main network (usually the distribution or core switch), facilitating data flow between different network segments.
Why Is It Necessary?
- High-Speed Data Transfer: The 10G SFP+ uplink provides significantly higher bandwidth for data-intensive applications and services, such as large file transfers and 4K streaming, enhancing overall network efficiency.
- Reduced Latency: The 10G SFP+ uplink can handle large volumes of data with minimal delay, which is beneficial for tasks requiring real-time data processing, including video conferencing.
- Optimized Traffic Flow: A 10G uplink helps manage the data flow efficiently and aggregate traffic from multiple 2.5G ports without saturating the uplink. This is especially important in networks with multiple devices connected, such as IP cameras, Wi-Fi access points, and IoT devices.
- Future-proofing: As network demands grow, it ensures that the network can scale to accommodate increased traffic. While the initial investment might be higher, a 10G connection reduces the need for frequent network upgrades.

How to Use a 2.5G Outdoor PoE Switch to Install Wi-Fi 5 APs?
Installing Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) outdoor access points is an effective way to extend high-speed Internet access to outdoor areas like parks, campuses, or stadiums. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to install Wi-Fi 5 APs using a 2.5G Outdoor PoE Switch.
1. Gather the Necessary Equipment
To set up your outdoor Wi-Fi network, you’ll need the following:
- 8-Port SFP+ Managed Switch
The 8-port SFP+ managed switch is ideal for larger networks where multiple devices need to be connected at 10G speeds. This Layer 3 switch allows for more control over the network settings and can handle multiple 10G connections simultaneously.
- 8-Port 2.5G Outdoor PoE Switch with 10G Uplink
The 8-port 2.5G outdoor PoE switch with 10G uplink is the core of your setup, providing both power and data connectivity to your access points. Compliant with IEEE802.3af/at standards, it can provide a maximum power of 30W per port. It comes with a rugged IP67 metal enclosure, providing robust protection against rain, snow and extreme temperatures.
- BiDi SFP+ Modules
BiDi SFP+ modules are transceivers that allow for data transmission over a single fiber optic cable. Unlike traditional SFP+ modules that require two fibers (one for sending and one for receiving data), BiDi modules only need one, cutting your fiber optic cabling needs in half. Also, they can handle speeds of up to 10Gbps or more,
- Direct-Burial Fiber Optic Cable
Direct-burial fiber optic cables (100% factory-perterminated and tested) are designed to be buried underground without the need for additional conduits. These cables are rugged and can withstand harsh environmental conditions, making them perfect for outdoor installations.

2.Plan Your Network Layout
Before you start, plan where each Wi-Fi 5 AP will be installed and how they will connect back to your network. Ensure that each AP is within reach of an Ethernet cable from the 2.5G outdoor PoE switch. Decide the fiber cable length by measuring the distance between the core switch and the 2.5G outdoor PoE switch. Ensure that the path avoids obstacles like large trees or buildings that might disrupt the cable.
3.Install the 2.5G Outdoor PoE Switch
Mount the 8-port 2.5G outdoor PoE switch in a secure location. Ensure it’s close enough to your APs to minimize cable lengths, which helps maintain signal strength and power efficiency. Also, make sure there’s an available power source nearby. The switch should be mounted on a wall or pole, protected from direct exposure to the elements, while still allowing easy access for cabling.

4.Connect the Wi-Fi 5 Outdoor Access Points
Use outdoor-rated Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables to connect each WiFi 5 AP to the PoE ports on the switch. These cables will carry both data and power to the APs. Power up the 2.5G outdoor PoE switch, and it will automatically supply power to each connected AP, so no separate power source is required.
5.Connect the Switch to the Network Core
Install BiDi SFP+ modules in the 10G uplink port of the 2.5G outdoor PoE switch and the corresponding port on the managed SFP+ switch. Carefully run the direct-burial fiber optic cable along the planned route and connect the switches. Ensure the cable is buried at an appropriate depth in areas prone to digging or heavy foot traffic.

6.Ground the Direct-Burial Fiber Optic Cable
Direct-burial fiber cables have metal parts that can conduct electricity. Grounding helps to protect the cable and connected equipment from lightning strikes and dissipate static electricity that may build up. Simply connect the conductor to the cable’s grounding point, usually a metallic shield or armor, and then attach the other end of the conductor to a suitable ground rod.

7.Configure the Network
Access the 8-port managed SFP+ switch’s interface and configure QoS and any necessary routing settings. Ensure the 10G uplink is set to prioritize traffic from the WiFi APs. Create VLANs if necessary, to segregate it from other networks. Then go back to the 2.5G outdoor PoE switch and set up each WiFi 5 AP, ensuring they are configured with the correct SSID, security settings, and channels to avoid IP address conflicts.
8.Test and the Wi-Fi Network
Once everything is connected and configured, verify that devices can connect to the Wi-Fi network and access the internet. Use a speed test tool to check the data transfer speeds across the network. You can walk around the coverage area with a Wi-Fi analyzer tool to check signal strength, identify any weak spots, and make adjustments as needed.
