Wi-Fi 5 PoE access points are designed to deliver high-speed wireless connectivity, supporting multiple devices and high data throughput. However, their installation can be complicated when the access point needs to be placed far from the main switch or power source, such as in large buildings or remote areas.

The primary challenge is that Ethernet cables (Cat5e/Cat6) are typically limited to 100 meters for both data transmission and power delivery. Beyond this distance, signal degradation occurs, leading to slower speeds and dropped packets. The further the distance, the more power loss. The Wi-Fi PoE access points may not receive sufficient power to operate efficiently. Additionally, outdoor installations often have additional challenges, such as exposure to harsh weather conditions, temperature fluctuations, and water ingress.
The Solution: Waterproof Gigabit PoE Extender
The waterproof Gigabit PoE extenders are specifically designed to extend both power and data over Ethernet cables beyond the 100-meter limit. They offer several features that make them well-suited for outdoor Wi-Fi installations:
- Gigabit Speed: This waterproof PoE extender supports 1Gbps speeds, ensuring high data transfer rates over extended distances. Note: It is NOT compatible with 10/100Mbps devices such as static IP cameras.
- 60W Max. Power Output: Compliant with IEEE802.3af/at/bt standards, this PoE extender can output up to 60W when powered by an 802.3bt PoE injector, making it suitable for power-hungry devices like digital signal displays.
- IP67 Waterproof: Designed for harsh outdoor environments, it features a rugged enclosure protecting the device from dust, water, and extreme temperatures. However, it’s crucial to secure both cable glands with a 27mm wrench (included) for a watertight seal.
- Direct-Burial: This waterproof PoE extender can be buried directly underground, simplifying installation in areas where overhead cabling is impractical.
- Flexible Placements: Support various mounting options such as wall mount and DIN-Rail; you can also snap and combine multiple extenders.

Why Not Choose a 10/100Mbps PoE Extender?
While there are 10/100Mbps PoE extenders available on the market, they are not suitable for Wi-Fi 5 PoE access points. Here’s why:
1.Bandwidth Requirements
Wi-Fi 5 PoE access points are designed to handle high-speed wireless connections, often exceeding 100Mbps. A 100Mbps PoE extender would act as a bottleneck, significantly reducing the overall performance and speed of the network, especially in environments with multiple connected devices.
2.Device Capacity
Wi-Fi 5 supports MU-MIMO technology, which allows multiple network devices to connect and communicate simultaneously. However, a 10/100Mbps PoE extender cannot handle the high data throughput required by MU-MIMO, leading to reduced efficiency and user experience.
How to Use the Waterproof Gigabit PoE Extender?
There are two primary methods to install your Wi-Fi 5 PoE access point over long distance using the waterproof Gigabit PoE extender:
Method 1: Extending the Distance Over 100 Meters
If you need to extend your network slightly beyond 100 meters, you can use the Gigabit PoE extender in the following setup:
Components Needed:
- Router or network switch
- 30W PoE injector (included)
- Waterproof Gigabit PoE extender
- Ethernet cables (2x 100M and a short patch cord)
- Wi-Fi 5 PoE access point

Installation Steps:
1.Connect the Router to the PoE Injector: Plug a short patch cord from your router or switch into the input port of the PoE injector.
2.Connect the PoE Injector to the PoE Extender: Use an Ethernet cable to connect the output port of the 30W PoE injector to the input port of the waterproof Gigabit PoE extender.
3.Connect the PoE Extender to the Wi-Fi 5 AP: Run another Ethernet cable from the output port of the waterproof Gigabit PoE extender to the input port of the Wi-Fi 5 PoE access point. You can install a surge protector if necessary.
4.Power the PoE Injector: Plug the PoE injector into a power source. The injector will power both the PoE extender and the Wi-Fi 5 AP through the Ethernet cables.

Method 2: Extending POE Up to 300 Meters Using Two Extenders
For outdoor Wi-Fi installations requiring a distance of up to 300 meters, you can easily extend the reach of PoE by connecting the input ports of two PoE extenders. Here’s how to do so:
Components Needed:
- Router or switch
- PoE injector (30W or higher)
- 2x Waterproof Gigabit PoE extenders
- Ethernet cables (short patch cords and one 300-meter cable)
- Wi-Fi 5 PoE access point

Installation Steps:
1.Connect the Router to the PoE Injector: Connect an Ethernet cable from your router or switch to the input port of the PoE injector.
2.Connect the Injector to the First PoE Extender: Use a short cable to connect the output port of the PoE injector to the OUTPUT port of the first Gigabit PoE extender.
3.Connect the First PoE Extender to the Second One: Run a 300-meter Ethernet cable from the INPUT port of the first waterproof Gigabit PoE extender to the INPUT port of the second PoE extender. This cable can be buried underground if necessary.
4.Connect the Second PoE Extender to the Wi-Fi 5 AP: Use a short patch cord to connect the output port of the second extender to the input port of the Wi-Fi 5 AP.
5.Power the PoE Injector: Plug the PoE injector into a power source. The injector will power both PoE extenders and the Wi-Fi 5 AP through the Ethernet cables. To avoid voltage drop and power loss over an extended range, it’s recommended to use a high-power PoE injector instead.

Why Choose Pure Copper Cables over CCA Cables?
Pure copper cables are made entirely of copper, which is a better conductor of electricity than Copper-Clad Aluminum (CCA) cables. They offer significantly lower electrical resistance, which helps preserve the quality of both data transmission and power delivery over extended distances. While CCA cables are cheaper, they have higher resistance, can cause signal loss, and are less durable, leading to potential issues like overheating or network failures.

Why Do You Need to Install a PoE Surge Protector?
Outdoor Wi-Fi installations are particularly vulnerable to power surges, especially during lightning storms. A power surge can travel through Ethernet cables, damaging all the connected devices. However, PoE surge protectors can effectively protect your Wi-Fi 5 APs and PoE extenders from power surges and electrostatic discharges.
How to Install PoE Surge Protectors:
1.Run an Ethernet cable from the input port of the first waterproof Gigabit PoE extender to the output of the first surge protector. Then, attach a 300-meter-long Ethernet cable to the input port of the surge protector.
2.At the end of the 300m run, connect the Ethernet cable to the input side of the second PoE surge protector.
3.From the output of the second PoE surge protector, connect another Ethernet cable to the input port of the second waterproof Gigabit PoE extender.
4.Connect the surge protector’s ground wire to a suitable grounding point. This will help redirect any electrical surges safely into the ground.

How to Ensure Wi-Fi 5 APs Run at 1Gbps?
To guarantee that your Wi-Fi 5 PoE access points operate at 1 Gbps, you need to use Cat 6 or higher-rated Ethernet cables, as they provide better performance over longer distances and are more resistant to interference. While PoE extenders are effective, using multiple extenders in a single cable run can introduce latency and reduce overall performance. Try to minimize the number of extenders used. Furthermore, you need to ensure that the PoE injector provides sufficient power for the APs after accounting for power losses due to distance and extenders. Some high-power APs may require PoE+ (802.3at) instead of standard PoE (802.3af).
