An Overview of Waterproof Gigabit PoE Extenders

An Overview of Waterproof Gigabit PoE Extenders

One of the primary challenges with PoE is signal degradation over long distances. Ethernet cables are generally limited to 100 meters (328 feet) for data transmission. Beyond this distance, signal loss occurs, leading to reduced data rates and network failures. Moreover, as more devices require high-speed internet, maintaining Gigabit data rates (1000 Mbps) becomes increasingly important. When you need to power devices like Wi-Fi access points in remote or outdoor locations, running separate power lines is often impractical and expensive. This is where Waterproof Gigabit PoE Extenders come into play.

What is a Waterproof Gigabit PoE Extender?

Waterproof Gigabit PoE extenders are designed to extend both data and power over Ethernet beyond the 100-meter limit. These extenders are rugged, weather-resistant, and capable of delivering high-speed Gigabit data rates while also providing power to the connected device through PoE.

The waterproof PoE extender supports speeds up to 1000Mbps, making it suitable for bandwidth-intensive applications such as large file transfers, video conferencing and cloud services. Compliant with IEEE82.3af/at/bt standards, it provides up to 60 watts when powered by an 802.3bt PoE injector (P.S. a 30W PoE injector is included). In addition, this Gigabit PoE extender is IP67 waterproof, designed to withstand harsh outdoor conditions such as dust, rain, and extreme temperatures.

Note: This PoE extender is not backward compatible with 10/100Mbps speeds.

How It Works?

The PoE injector supplies power and data to the waterproof Gigabit PoE extender via an Ethernet cable. It is typically installed indoors, connected to a power source and the network switch or router. The PoE extender receives the signal from the injector, amplifies it, and then transmits this boosted signal for another 100 meters to the connected device.

Benefits of Waterproof Gigabit PoE Extenders

1. Extended Reach

The most obvious benefit of these extenders is their ability to extend the range of PoE networks beyond the typical 100-meter limit. This is crucial for large-scale installations, such as in campus, industrial sites, or outdoor Wi-Fi installations, where devices need to be positioned far from the main network infrastructure.

2. Robust Protection

With their waterproof and ruggedized design, these extenders are built to withstand harsh conditions, such as rain, snow, dust, and extreme temperatures. This durability means they keep working reliably even when exposed to the elements, reducing the need for repairs or replacements.

3. HighSpeed Data Transmission

Waterproof Gigabit PoE extenders support Gigabit Ethernet, which provides very fast data transfer speeds (1000 Mbps) without causing bottlenecks. This is crucial for applications that require high bandwidth, like video conferencing which requires high data rates to transmit real-time video feeds.

4. Cost Efficiency

Instead of running separate power lines and Ethernet cables, these extenders send both data and power through a single cable. This simplifies the installation process, cutting down on labor and material costs. It also means a cleaner, more organized setup with fewer cables cluttering the space.

How to Use the Waterproof Gigabit PoE Extender?

Setting up a waterproof Gigabit PoE extender is straightforward but requires careful planning to ensure optimal performance. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Plan Your Network Layout

Determine the distance between each device and ensure that it doesn’t exceed the maximum range allowed by the Gigabit PoE extender. Identify where the PoE injector, extender, and device will be placed.

Step 2: Install the PoE Injector

Connect the PoE injector to your network switch or router via a standard Ethernet cable, and plug it into a nearby power source. Ensure that the PoE injector delivers the appropriate wattage as per your device’s power requirement.

Step 3: Connect the PoE Extender

Connect an Ethernet cable from the PoE injector to the input port of the PoE extender. This cable carries both power and data to the end device. If you need to extend the distance up to 300 meters, instead of daisy-chaining multiple extenders which can introduce potential failure points, you can connect the input ports of two waterproof Gigabit PoE extenders using a continuous run of Ethernet cable.

Step 4: Connect the Device

Finally, connect the device such as a Wi-Fi 5 access point to the output port of the PoE extender using another Ethernet cable. Ensure that all devices are receiving both power and data and verify that the network signal is stable across the extended distance.

Why Do You Need to Secure the Cable Glands?

The IP67 rating indicates that the device is dust-tight and can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. However, this rating only holds if the entire assembly, including the cable entry points, is properly sealed. Even with an IP67-rated PoE extender, water can still enter through the cable entry points if the cable glands are not properly sealed. This can cause short circuits, corrosion, and damage to the internal components. Besides water, cable glands protect the device from other environmental factors like dust, dirt, and chemical exposure. A well-secured cable gland also prevents the cable from being pulled out or moved around.

To secure and waterproof cable glands properly, follow these steps:

1.Choose the right cable gland. Ensure the gland matches the diameter of the cable. If it’s too big or too small, it won’t seal properly.

2.Disassemble the cable gland into three parts: gland body (with washer), inserting seal and sealing nut.

3.Attach the gland body to the extender and fasten it tightly with a 27mm wrench.

4.Pass the cable through the sealing nut and the inserting seal in sequence, and plug the connector into the PoE extender’s input/output port.

5.Insert the seal into the gland body and hand-tighten the sealing nut until it grips the cable. Then use the wrench to snug it up further to create a watertight seal.

6.Ensure the cable gland on each side is evenly compressed and that no part of the cable is exposed or pinched.

7.For extra protection, apply a waterproof sealing compound like silicone around the cable entry point inside and outside the gland.

Why You Can Only Use It with Standard PoE Devices?

These waterproof Gigabit PoE extenders are designed to work with specific PoE standards, such as IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, or 802.3bt. These standards define the voltage and current levels that can safely be passed through Ethernet cables. Using a non-standard PoE device might draw more power than the extender can safely supply, leading to potential overheating, damage or failure of the extender. In terms of data transmission, standard PoE devices are designed to work with the same signaling and voltage levels as our PoE extender. Non-standard devices might use different wiring configurations, leading to connectivity issues.

How to Mount Waterproof Gigabit PoE Extenders?

Our waterproof Gigabit PoE extenders can be mounted in several ways, including:

1.Wall Mounting

To install the PoE extender on a wall or a flat surface, simply install the extender in a wall mount bracket and screw the bracket directly into the wall. You can mark the spots where the mounting screw will go, using the wall mount bracket as a template.

2.DIN-Rail Mounting

DIN-rail mounting is common in control panels or racks. Simply attach the DIN-Rail clip or bracket to the back of the Gigabit PoE extender. Firmly snap the extender onto the DIN-Rail and ensure it clicks into place. Next, arrange the cables neatly along the rail and use cable ties to keep everything organized.

3.Pole Mounting

PoE extenders can also be mounted on poles for outdoor installations like wireless access points. To do so, wrap the straps around the PoE extender and the pole. Then, tighten the straps until the extender is securely attached to the pole.

4.Snap and Combine

Some PoE extenders are designed to snap together or stack, allowing multiple units to be combined and mounted as a single unit. To get started, you need to identify the extender’s snap-fit components. One side will have tabs or clips, while the other has corresponding slots or grooves to receive these tabs. Once aligned, gently slide the extenders together until you hear or feel a click.

5.Underground Installation

Extenders that are rated for direct-burial, can be placed underground without conduits. But it might take a little effort. You need to dig a trench of appropriate depth, typically 6-12 inches, and sometimes deeper in high-traffic areas. Place the PoE extender inside the trench and run the cable along the path. For underground installations, you may need to use shield cables for extra protection. Lastly, cover the extender and cables with soil, making sure there is no sharp debris that could damage the cables.
